I don’t know much about developing film but I’m pretty sure film whether it’s still or motion needs to be developed first in order to be reviewed. Is this correct? If so, how do movie directors review footage on the spot that was filmed on a film camera? Wouldn’t it need to be developed first and isn’t that process somewhat lengthy?
Hi Stephen, and welcome to Yahoo!Answers:
Fellow Contributors Dave ("Palladini") and Ian ("Iridflare") have been in the video biz (and here on Y!A) for quite a few years, but I don’t think either has been on a movie set much. Or not lately.
Reviewing footage is very important, but some of the reviewing of film dailies has been eliminated by live viewing of each "take" by the director via monitors in what’s now called "video assist" (pioneered by Jerry Lewis in the mid-1950’s, when he both acted in and directed his own films, although others had the same idea since the late ’40s & early ’50s).
Y!A newcomer "Ege" covered the monitors that are used for live viewing "on set", but didn’t mention the small video cameras that are attached to each film camera (in a method similar to the optical viewfinder that the D.P./cameraman uses) to feed the picture to the monitors. Extra video monitors are used (on the cameras themselves) when there are camera assistants in charge of focus-pulling and dolly moves. Video recorders in the system allow instant replay or later Review, to see if re-shoots might be needed (mike boom visible in the shot, bad audio or flubbed lines, etc.).
And one aspect of your Question not covered by the others is regarding "film stills". Until the advent of "digital camera backs", professional still photogs used "Polaroid backs" attached to their high-end cameras to take an "instant" test shot for important setups (e.g., magazine covers & advertising/poster shots). Now, when film negatives are still required, a digital version of the old Polaroid camera-back is used to check lighting, composition details, and exposure, especially when strobe-flash is used.
For actual film "daily rushes" as mentioned by Iridflare, the process isn’t lengthy (since you asked) — they are called "dailies" or "rushes" for the exact reason that they are processed daily and "rushed" back to the set location or a convenient screening room.
I used to run a 16mm film processing and printing lab, and I could process and print several feature-length projects in an evening’s time. The 35mm film used by most features takes twice as much film for the same time-length of shooting, but still processes and prints fairly fast.
For more detailed info, in addition to Ian’s recommending the Wikipedia "Dailies" article, I’d recommend the Wiki article on "Video Assist": http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Video_assist
hope this helps,
–Dennis C.
